Abstract
A process for producing alkali-resistant fabrics from alginic materials comprises the steps of first producing alginate yarn or fibre of alkali soluble type, then manufacturing fabric therefrom, and thereafter converting the alkali-soluble alginate to alkali resistant alginic material. The fabric may be treated with basic chromium or beryllium salts, or, when calcium alginate is the soluble material, the calcium may first be removed by treatment with acid such as hydrochloric acid and the fabric then treated with basic chromium or beryllium salts, or with formaldehyde, or with both. Treating solutions specified are basic beryllium acetate, basic chromium sulphate, and 20 per cent formaldehyde containing 5 per cent ammonium chloride. The formaldehyde may be applied in the form of vapour. Specifications 541,847, 545,872 and 550,525 are referred to.
