Abstract
542,494. Treating aluminium ; alloys. ORMISTON, H. O. July 8, 1940, No. 11399. [Class 82 (i)] Fluxes for use in the production, melting, and casting of aluminium and aluminium alloys contain lithium chloride and an aluminium salt of an organic acid such as aluminium acetate, with or without another alkali metal chloride, calcium fluoride, cryolite, and a deoxidizing agent such as sulphur. Sodium chloride may be the preponderating constituent, and the amount of calcium fluoride and cryolite together may be greater than that of the remaining ingredients other than the alkali metal chloride. An example contains 20 parts of calcium fluoride, 60 parts of sodium chloride, 2 parts of lithium chloride, 10 parts of cryolite, 6 parts of aluminium acetate, and 2 parts of sulphur. Molten metal to be cast may be skimmed, stirred with a small amount of the flux, again skimmed, stirred with a further amount of the flux, again skimmed, and then cast.
