Abstract

In the preparation of iron-alloy castings adapted to be hardened by nitrogenization and containing up to 5 per cent of aluminium and preferably also up to 8 per cent of chromium, inclusions of aluminium oxide are removed by the addition to the molten alloy of solvents for aluminium oxide such as alkali or alkaline earth compounds, preferably fluorides or double fluorides. The addition may be made in the ladle.
