Abstract
Aluminium alloys other than aluminium-magnesium alloys are degassed by treatment with a composition consisting of, in percentage by weight: .Lithium chloride.2-10 .Sodium fluoride.5-40 .Fluorite.5-20 .Cryolite.2-20 .Sodium chloride.5-40 .Potassium chloride.5-30 Treatment is effected by stirring into the molten alloy 0.2-1% of its weight of the refining agent, and then removing the slag produced. It may be carried out at temperatures below 680 DEG C. A particular alloy exemplified contains in percentage by weight: .Cu.1.8- 1.2 .Si.10.5-12 .Mg.0.3 .Zn.1 .Fe.1.3 .Mn.0.5 .Ni.0.5 .Sn.0.35 .Al.balance
