Abstract
542,237. Pumps; valves. KJELLBERG. C. F. G. March 7, 1940, No. 4288. [Classes 7 (ii) and 7 (vi)] In an engine, particularly of the two-stroke type, the exhaust ports d, d<SP>1</SP> are closed by the piston on the compression stroke, and an additional charge is then supplied to the working cylinder by a pump h controlled by a rotary slide valve 3 providing the end wall 2 of the pump chamber, the wall 2 being axially displaceable so as to vary the clearance of the pump and also to act as a relief valve. Scavenging-air is supplied from the crankcase through passages c, c<SP>1</SP>, and the additional charge of mixture from the pump 1 through ports 7, 7<SP>1</SP> controlled by the valve 3, which also controls the pump inlet 6, the end wall 2 being secured to the valve 3 and adjustable axially by means of a nut 14. If ignition should occur before the engine piston g has covered the port 7<SP>1</SP>, the wall 2 and valve 3 of the pump will be forced outwardly against the action of a spring so as to increase the pump clearance and reduce the risk of damage thereto. This is further reduced, if the wall 2 is moved far enough, by the escape of excessive pressure. The pump 1 may supply a pair of cylinders.
