Abstract
441,858. Cylinders. WILDERMAN, P., 4, Chartfield Avenue, Putney, London. July 25, 1934, No. 21704. [Class 7 (ii)] In each four-stroke cycle, a closed pressurerelief chamber 10 is connected to the combustion chamber after ignition has occurred but before maximum pressure is reached, the connection remaining during the greater part of the rest of the expansion and, if desired, during the exhaust strokes, but being closed for the remainder of the cycle. The connecting means may comprise a spring-loaded valve 11 ; the return means may comprise a lightly-loaded valve 12, and the connecting parts may be arranged in the cylinder wall so as to be uncovered by the piston just after ignition has occurred. The chamber 10 may be scavenged by compressed air admitted through a valve-controlled port 26 during the exhaust period of the cycle. In Fig. IIIa, the entry port 5 to a pressure-relief chamber 1 is controlled by a piston valve B operated from the engine by an adjustable eccentric, which may be arranged so that the main piston opens the port during the expansion stroke, but so that it is closed during the admission and compression strokes by the valve B. A removable head 12 may be arranged in line with the port 5 so that the pressure relief chamber is entirely closed when the port 5 is covered by the piston B. The application to double-acting and opposed-piston engines, and to multicylinder engines, is described. The Provisional Specification describes pressurerelief chambers which are not closed during the compression stroke. Specification 28339 /08, [Class 7], is referred to.
