Abstract

542,357. Two-stroke engines ; regulating pumps. KJELLBERG, C. F. G. March 7, 1940, No. 4308. [Classes 7 (ii) and 7 (vi)] In an engine having a reciprocating charging-pump for supplying a charge to the working cylinder during the compression period, the inlet of the charging-pump is connected with the outlet of a reciprocating pre-charging-pump arranged so that the compression stroke of the pre-charging pump and the suction stroke of the charging-pump end substantially at the same time. The Figures show a two-stroke engine in which a charging-pump 7 controlled by a rotary sleeve valve 14 supplies two working cylinders 1 through passages 13, the inlet to the pump 7 being connected by a passage 23 to the outlet 21 of a pre-charging- pump 16. The pump 16 is driven directly from the engine shaft and is double-acting, while the pump 7 is driven at double engine speed by a chain 11. The supply from the pump 16 to the pump 7 is adjustable by means of a throttle valve 24, and a rotary byepass valve 29, which also is movable axially against a spring 28 to act as a pressure-relief valve. A further valve 25 is provided for cutting out the pump 16 and connecting the passage 23 directly to a carburetter or to the atmosphere. The throttle valve 24 and valve 29 may be so connected that the latter is gradually opened as the throttle is closed. In gas engines the inlet of the pump 16 is connected to a gas generator and may be provided with a device for mixing the gas with air.
