Abstract
538,685. Piston rings. PERFECT CIRCLE CO. Feb. 12, 1940, No. 2675. Convention date, Feb. 18, 1939. [Class 122 (i)] A piston ring comprises a pair of thin split rings 9, 10, engaging opposite sides of the piston groove, and a thin spring ribbon expander 11 having parts 13 with parallel edges to space the rings apart, curved parts 12 engaging the bottom of the groove, and parts 14 engaging the inner edges of the rings to force them outwardly. The expander ends 17 also space the rings apart and each end is shaped to project into the gap of one ring, so that the rings are prevented from relative movement. Recesses 25 permit oil scraped from the cylinder wall to pass to drain openings in the piston. In a modification, the expander is of polygonal form with sides formed by rounded parts, the width of the expander being uniform and the spacer members pressed out to form openings for oil drainage.
