Abstract
537,883. Girders; floors. STEINHARD, E. Feb. 28, 1940, No. 3696. [Class 20 (iv)] A pre-formed girder composed of a series of hollow blocks assembled end to end presents on the upper and lower faces continuous longitudinal grooves 6, 7 which are filled with re-inforced concrete C, and the ends of the re-inforcing metal 12, 13 are bent inwardly to form hooks 14, 15 which are embedded in concrete in cavities in the end blocks. The blocks A comprise a central rib 1 of I or T-section which in the end blocks B finishes short of the end face to provide the cavities aforesaid. The longitudinal grooves 6, 7 are dovetailed, and the blocks are provided at one or both ends with undercut transverse steps to receive concrete D. Instead of the central rib 1 being continuous between adjacent blocks, as in Fig. 5, slots may be formed, as in Fig. 6, to permit the insertion of re-inforcing stirrups 16. If desired the re-inforcement 12 may be omitted on the upper face. The girders may be assembled side by side to form a floor or ceiling, or may be used individually, for example, as lintels.
