Abstract
536,306. Extrusion machines; moulding oil cake for animals. GAVIN, P. J. Jan. 31, 1940, No. 1889. [Class 87 (ii)] [Also in Group I] A machine for steaming, cubing, drying and mixing food stuffs for livestock comprises a vertical mixing and steaming chamber 2 provided with a feed worm or rotary screw 3 which feeds the material to a cubing chamber 6 also provided with a worm feed 10, the chamber 2 having a feed hopper 4 adapted to feed the material against the steam pressure prevailing in the chamber, the chambers 2, 4 being provided with a common steam heating jacket 1, 7. The top part 14 of the chamber 2 acts as a cooking chamber and is provided with a mixer 15. The food stuffs are fed from the hopper 4 through an extension 20 provided with a pair of non- return valves 18, 19 and fed intermittently with steam at a pressure higher than that prevailing in the chamber 2 by means of a rotating hollow plug type tap driven by a shaft 23 and supplied with steam through pipe 47. When acting as an extrusion .press the exit of the chamber 6 is provided with a plate 8 having cubing orifices and rotating knife 13 is mounted on, the shaft of the worm 10 to cut off the cubes. Steam is admitted under high pressure to the jacket 1 by a pipe 43 and at lower pressure to the chamber 2 through a pipe 48, pressure gauges 38, 39 and thermometer 40 being provided.
