707,867. Chipping wood. FITCHBURG ENGINEERING CORPORATION. Dec. 2, 1952, No. 30584/52. Class 145 (1) A wood-chipping machine for producing uniform chips from logs, boards, branches or brushwood, for use in the pulp and paper industry or as cattle bedding &c., comprises a rotary cutter head 28 having longitudinal wedgesecured blades 36 co-operating with a fixed bed knife 48 and a work-table 14 slidable in slots 16, 18 in the machine frame against the action of springs 34 with its inner end adjacent the bed knife 48, the arrangement being such that material placed on the table is automatically drawn through the machine by the cutter head and, to assist in this, a bevel 40 ahead of each blade gullet allows the material to enter into the area of the cutter head before being engaged by a blade. The slots 16, 18 are at a slight angle to each other so that the inner end of the table, which yields slightly when knots in the logs or branches are being chipped, has a greater movement than the outer end. The bed knife has double-bevelled edges at both ends and is reversible and adjustable in a slot 42. In a modification, the table is inclined to the horizontal so that the feed is gravity-assisted and the bed knife is then fitted in a more rearwardly position on the arc of the cutter head. The machine may be mounted on a trailer fitted with the driving engine and a chip-delivery duct may be connected to the outlet 54.
