663,329. De-airing plastic materials. EDWARDS & JONES, Ltd., JONES, A., JONES, W. H., and JONES, S. July 27, 1950. [Aug. 23, 1949] No. 21818/49. Class 86. In a machine for de-airing plastic materials comprising a feed barrel, a chamber susceptible to vacuum action, and holes or openings through which the material is extruded from the barrel to the chamber, means are provided whereby the dimensions of the holes or openings can be adjusted to suit the material being dealt with. As described the apparatus comprises a first pug or barrel 11, Fig. 2, a vacuum chamber 15 and a second pug or barrel 16, not shown in Fig. 2, having its inlet end vertically below the vacuum chamber and having an extrusion die at its outlet end. A pair of plates 30, 31, each having correspondingly arranged perforations 37, 38, Fig. 3, are provided between the pug 11 and the chamber 15, the plate 31 being capable of limited rotary movement under the action of a rack and worm mechanism 32, 33 whereby the corresponding perforations in the plates 30, 31 may be brought into register to a greater or lesser extent so as to vary the effective size of the perforations. Fixed and rotary cutters 40, 41 are provided fitting fairly closely up to the plates 30, 31.
