528,489. Grinding-machines. SOC. ANON. DE RECTIFICATION ET D'ENGRENAGES PROCEDES MINERVA. May 8, 1939, No. 13757. Convention date, May 13, 1938. [Class 60] A grinding-machine described as for grinding gear teeth, has frame members fitted to the main frame and so formed that with other main frame elements it forms a closed housing for working parts of the machine, whereby abrasive dust and water are excluded. The machine comprises a base 6 on which slides a carriage 4 having thereon an index mechanism 2 with a bearing 3 for the work spindle 15. The machine also comprises a column 7 on which is mounted a grinding-wheel carriage 8, and between the base 6 and the column 7 is a housing comprising a frame member 9 and a front frame member 10 with a horizontal extension 11 having a bent down part 12, the housing being closed by the base and the column and by side frame members. The bearing 3, which is slidable through the member 10 is provided with a stuffing box, the packing 18 of which may bear on a cap 17, Fig. 3, attached to the spindle 15. For work requiring to be mounted between centres, a tailstock 21 may be provided, carried by bars 19, 20 passing through stuffing boxes in the wall 12 and fixed to or removably carried by the carriage 4. The top of the carriage and the extension 11 may be curved at 22, 23 to accommodate work of as large a diameter as possible. Inspection holes, fitted with removable covers may be provided in the walls of the housing.
