[Class 60] In a grinding-machine having a variablespeed gear and a movable wheel guard with interlocked movements, the mechanisms for operating the speed gear and for moving the guard are controlled by a single operating member, whereby the wheel cannot be run at a greater speed than that suited to its diameter. The machine comprises a base a having therein an electric motor b driving, through a variable speed gear box e, a spindle c having on each end a grinding-wheel d. Each wheel d is partially surrounded by a guard i carried by a slide movable transversely of the spindle c, and carrying a work-rest k provided with an adjustable upper plate. The slides are moved by screws l driven, through bevel gearing l<1>, m<1> and spiral gearing n<2>, by a hand wheel n on a spindle n<1>, the spindle also carrying a gear n<3>, which, through a train of gears, operates the shaft h to change the gear in the box e ; as the guards are advanced as the wheels wear, the speed of rotation of the wheels is simultaneously raised to maintain the peripheral speed approximately constant. The guards may be pivoted instead of being slidable, separate work-rests being provided.
