Abstract
527,419. Blowpipe burners. NATIONAL CYLINDER GAS CO. April 11, 1939, No. 11030. Convention date, July 1, 1938. [Class 75 (i)] [Also in Group XXIX] In an oxy-acetylene or like torch, particularly for surface hardening, in which the supply pipes 10, 11 communicate through a mixing-chamber in the handle 16 with the tip 18, the stop valves in the pipes 10, 11 are operated simultaneously and the oxygen valve is adapted, on closing, to open the pipe 11 on the discharge side directly to the atmosphere so as to reduce the proportion of oxygen in the mixture and thereby prevent backfiring. As shown in Fig. 4, the acetylene valve comprises a slidable sleeve 22 having a chamber 23 adapted to be brought into register with annular series of ports 20, 21 on opposite sides of a partition 19 in the pipe 10. In the closed position, the ports 21 register with a closed chamber 27. Spring-pressed gaskets 24, 25, 28 are provided. In the oxygen valve, Fig. 5, the chamber 27 is omitted so that, in the closed position, oxygen can escape through the ports 21. The sleeves 22 are provided with annular grooves 39 engaged by pivoted levers 33, each engaged between a pair of arms 36 on a common operating lever 30. The initial setting of the levers 33 may be adjusted by means of screws 37. Alternatively the lever 30 may be adapted to engage the sleeves directly. In a modification, the pipes 10, 11 are provided with a common stop cock 40, Fig. 8, the oxygen pipe 11 on the discharge side being connected in the closed position, with an outlet 44 through the main oxygen passage 42 and a branch 43.
