839,430. Preventing pre-ignition explosions in partial combustion furnaces. SOC. BELGE DE L'AZOTE ET DES PRODUITS CHIMIQUES DU MARLY. Dec. 9, 1958 [Feb. 5, 1958], No. 39681/58. Class 47 In a furnace for the partial combustion of hydrocarbons, wherein gaseous or vaporised hydrocarbons are mixed in a mixing chamber 2 which communicates through a distributer 4 with a combustion chamber 5, a thermo-couple 16 is provided in the mixing chamber to detect a preignition and thereby transmit an electrical impulse to electro-magnetic relays operating valves in the inlet and outlet conduits of the furnace to cause the followoperations to occur:-(a) the instantaneous closing at valves 8, 11 of the inlet conduits 7, 10 for oxygen and hydro-carbon respectively; (b) the instantaneous introduction of nitrogen through a valve 22 into the hydrocarbon inlet conduit 10; (c) the instantaneous introduction of nitrogen into the oxygen inlet conduit 7 through a valve 20 at a position close to the mixing chamber; (d) the instantaneous closing at a valve 14 of the outlet conduit 13 for the gaseous products so causing the gaseous products to be expelled through a venting device 15; (e) the instantaneous shutting down of pre-heaters 9, 12 for the inlet conduits; and (f) after a time sufficient to complete the purging of the hydrocarbon inlet conduit 10, the introduction of nitrogen through a valve 21 into the oxygen inlet conduit.
