Abstract

512,218. Ink; fountain pens. BIRO, L. J. Dec. 19, 1938, No. 36883. [Class 146 (iii)] An ink for use with a fountain pen having a ball marking point consists of a viscous, quickly drying part such as a solution of glue or dextrine or other carbohydrate, and a coloured non-drying preferably hygroscopic liquid which is easily separated by physical means from the quick drying portion. The non-drying liquid acts to prevent drying of the ink on the ball, but sinks rapidly into the paper, and preferably acts as a lubricant for the ball. The non-drying liquid should also act as the solvent for the colour, and may consist of glycerine or cholesterized oil. To prevent the supply of too much fluid to the ball 8, it is so mounted in the nozzle 5 that it is held between two annular surfaces, the intermediate part of the bearing being enlarged. The nozzle is mounted in a section 2 having a screw-threaded projection by means of which a cartridge 9 for the ink is attached. The outer end of the cartridge is normally closed by a piston 12 having a screw-threaded rod 14 rotatably mounted in the cartridge and extending beyond its end in order to be engaged by a rotatable operating-head 16 in the barrel; a spring 21 in the head acts to exert pressure on the fluid. Modifications are described in which the piston is operated by a rod entirely separate from the piston so that the rod is not discarded when the cartridge is empty; in one of these modifications, the rod is telescopic to enable a longer container to be used.
