These reservoirs may contain inks of any color, for example red, purple and blue. These colors are indicated upon the extension 28 as shown in Figures 9 and 10 of the drawings. The knurled lange 29 contains an indicating mark 30 and when this mark is brought into register with any one of the arrows 31 upon the extension 28, the passage 23 will be in register with the outer end of one of the passages 22, depending upon the color selected. Ink from the reservoir 16 containing the selected color will thenflow from this reservoir through the passages 22 and 23 to the pen point. The pen point may be protected by a cap 32 which has a threaded engagement with the barrel and this cap carries-a clip 33, whereby the` pen may be retained within the pocket of the user. The clip`33 is provided at its free end with a` clothing engagingportion 34, while the inner end of the clip issecured within the cap by means of a sleeve 35.
The ends of the reservoirs 16 remote vfrom '5 the pen point have secured thereto transversely rectangular shafts 36. These shafts are longitudinally slidable in sleeves 37provided in a bearing member 38 which is threaded-ly secured in the end of the barrel l5 as shown in Figure 2 of the drawings. The shafts 36 have mounted thereon pinions 39, 40 and 41. Thesepinions are axially and circumferentially offset and are adapted to be engaged by an internally toothed operating ring gear 42. This gear 42 is axially adjustable and is positioned within a cap 43 at the end of the pen. The gear 42 is provided with radially disposed diametrically located lugs 44 which are received within slots 45 provided in the cap 43. Thus, the gear 42 is permitted independent axial movement, but is rotated when the cap is'rotated.
Extending inwardly from the gear 42 are diametrically located pins 46. These pins have one of their ends secured to the gear 42 as shown at47, while the other ends ofthe pins are provided with lugs 48 whichenter grooves 49 provided in a positioningring 50. The grooves 49 are inclined as shown'in Figure 6 of the drawings and/are located upon diametrically oppositesidesof the sleeve jas 7 The grooves are provided with'lands 51, 52 and 53 and `when the lugs 48 are positioned within the lands 51, the gear 42 will engage in pinion 39. In this position, rotation of the cap 43 will collapse the reservoir l16 with which the pinion 39 is connected. Air will thus be exhausted from the reservoir and ink will be drawn inward as the reservoir resumes its normal position, as will be readily understood. By rotating the positioning` sleeve 50, the lugs 48 will travel through the inclined grooves 49 to the land 52, whereupon the gear 42 will engage the pinion 40 to rotate said v.pinion and collapse its' particular reservoir. Further rotation of the sleeve 50 will position the lugs 48 in the lands 53 so that the gear 42 will engage the pinion 41. Any one of the reservoirs 16 may thus be filled.
The shafts of the pinions 40 and 41 are provided at their ends remote from the reservoirs with bearing members 54. .y
In order to prevent accidental rotary movement of the pen point, the invention providesa spring 54. As shown in Figure 8 of the drawings, one end of this dog enters a groove or recess provided in the sleeve 27 andthe other end of this. dog is engaged within a "groove provided in the projection28.; Three ,grooves are provided in the projection y28 and these grooves are so positioned as to be engaged by the dog 544 when thewpen point is -adjustedtov any of thethree positions forged, purple or blue ink. Due tothe resilient .connection of the dog 54 it will have a yielding engagement within the groove so that the pen lpoint may be manually,'rotatedforthe purpose above set forth. y A u In order toV accurately position lthe ring gear 42to-fill afparticular reservoir., the-ring 50is provided with an yindicating mark whichxis adapted to be brought into register with either the -wordred,` purple or blue provided on the barrel of thepen., In other wordsiwhen it is desired to fill the red reservoir, the indicatori 55 ispositionedas shown in Figure 1 so that the ring gear 42 will engage the. proper pinion for collapsing the red ink reservoir.
, The invention is susceptible of various ohangesin its form, proportions and minor details of construction and the rightis herein reserved ,tomalre such changes `as properly fall within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described lthe invention what is claimed is:
1.
