[Class, 83 (iii)] In an automatic lathe for bar stock material, a collet 72 slidably mounted within the hollow shaft 10 of the lathe is adapted to engage frictionally and disengage the front end of the bar S on being axially displaced relatively to the shaft by means of a tube 70' which is periodically drawn back against the action of a spring 73 by two co-operating cam discs 75, 76 mounted between the end of the shaft 10 and a collar 78 on the end of the tube 70, one of the cams 7 being given a periodic rotary movement from a cam shaft 60. While the collet is disengaged from the bar, the bar is fed forwardly by means of a feed tube 80 frictionally engaging the bar at its split front end 80<1> and adapted to be pushed forwardly by an arm 88 which is periodically moved against the action of a spring 9a by means of a lever 84 operated from the cam shaft 60.
