Abstract
486,091. Feeding bar-stack; chucks. FORKARDT, R. Nov. 27, 1936, Nos. 32601 and 32602. Convention dates, Nov. 27, 1935 and Feb. 26, 1936. [Class 83 (iii)] In a combined bar-stock gripping and feeding device and a work-holding chuck for a lathe &c., both are operated by fluid-pressure, the cylinder of the feeding device piston being coaxial with the machine spindle and the piston allowing the stock-bar to be fed axially through it. Separate pistons may be employed for the gripping and feeding device and for the workholding chuck or the piston for the former may also operate the latter, in which construction the piston 7, Fig. 5, of the feeding and gripping device has an extension 5 which engages with the extension 20 of the work-holding chuck 21 to close the latter when the feeding device reaches the end of its rearward movement. The feeding and gripping device is of similar construction to that described in connection with Specification 486,092, an adjustable bolt 12 carried by a rotatable member 11 being moved to grip the stock or release it upon relative movement between its support 8 and the piston 7, into a slot in which an extension of the member 11 engages. The chuck 21 is opened by spring pressure, but the rotatable member 23, carrying an adjustable gripping dog, resists backward movement of the stock 10 through the offcentre position of the gripping dog. A bevelclosing chuck 26, Fig. 6, may be used and in such a construction a spring-operated gripping device 23a is employed, to the rear of the feeding device, to prevent backward movement of the stock when the feeding device is on its return stroke. The feeding device may be adapted to reverse automatically and continue feeding for a number of strokes when a long length of stock is required for each work-piece. Specification 125,575, [Class 83 (iii)], also is referred to.
