Abstract

501,113. Mechanical presses. PARFITT, A. W. (Majik-Ironers, Inc.) June 29, 1938, No. 19265. [Class 87 (ii)] [Also in Group VIII] A press is provided with a prestressed pressure spring or equivalent unit which is pivoted between the press frame and one of the press members so that the press may be freely opened or closed without having to overcome the force of the pressure unit which may be swung, after closing or before opening, to various positions-to vary the magnitude of its effect on the press members. In the simple form shown, wherein the head lever 4 is pivoted at 5, the unit comprises a prestressed spring 12 pivoted at one end 13 to a stationary post 14 and at its other end to a link 9 which is pivoted to the head lever at 10. A stop 16 on the link coacts with the head lever. The link and spring are substantially of the same length and when the press is open the pivot 5 and the pivot of the spring with the link are substantially in alignment so that the spring offers no resistance to the swinging movement of the head. After the press has been closed, the pivots 10, 13 substantially coincide and the spring unit may be rotated by a handle 15 into a pressureapplying position. Several more elaborate embodiments are described including one wherein the pressure unit comprises a Sylphon bellows arrangement. The pressure exerted may vary, according to the form of the apparatus, from a few hundred pounds to several thousand pounds. The effects of arranging that the various centres of rotation do not coincide are discussed in the Specification.
