Abstract
313,353. Gray, F. T., and Whitaker, Ltd., R. G. July 24, 1928. Ironing-presses.-In a garment-press having power means for closing the press and for applying the final heavy pressure, the closing means are arranged to be ineffective unless they are aided manually and the pressure-applying means are inoperative until after the press has been closed, and means are provided for maintaining them inoperative if desired. The press head lever b, Fig. 1, is linked to a bell-crank lever f one arm of which is linked to a bell-crank lever f pivoted to the piston rod m of a piston n which works in a cylinder o. The rocker bar is also linked to a cam l which is pivoted to the frame and which acts on a roller e after the press has been closed to raise the link c and apply the heavy pressure. The cylinder o is connected by a pipe q to a radial port r<2>, Fig. 5, in a valve block r The port leads into an axial aperture r', Figs. 4 and 5. which passes right through the block r. Two other radial ports r<3>, r<4> communicate with oppositely directed apertures in the block r and with a source of vacuum and the atmosphere respectively. Diaphragms r<6> are clamped over the faces of the block r and are separated by a distance piece r<s> of a length greater than the thickness of the block r. A spring r<7>, Fig. 4, normally maintains communication between the cylinder o and the source of vacuum by way of q, r<2>, r<1>, and r<3>. The friction and inertia of the linkage system and press head are, however, sufficient to prevent the piston n from closing the press unless manually aided. A treadle u may be depressed to prevent application of heavy pressure, the free end of the treadle obstructing the movement of the rocker bar j. The press is opened by depression of a treadle t which through a rod t<1>, Fig. 4, raises the distance piece r<8> against the spring r' and puts tEe cylinder o into communication with atmosphere through q, r<2>, r<1>, r<4> thereby permitting the spring p in the cylinder o to open the press, the cylinder and piston serving as a dashpat during the opening movement.
