[Class 64 (iii)] A plate heat-exchanger of the kind described in Specification 477,999 is formed of alternate thick plates 10 and thin plates 16 deformable under the pressure of the heating or cooling fluid to form relatively thin spaces 23 for the milk &c. being treated. The thick plates are provided with packing strips 13 substantially thicker than the spaces 23 and the thin plates with spacing strips 19. In a modification, the thin plates 24, Fig. 6, are permanently offset towards adjacent thick plates. In another arrangement, the exchanger comprises thin plates 27, 28, Fig. 7, permanently offset towards one another. In a further modification, the thin plates are deflected towards the thick plates by strips 31, Fig. 8, secured to the latter plates. In a further arrangement, the exchanger is formed of thin plates deflected by cover-plates 32, Fig. 9, and a central hollow plate. In a still further modification, the exchanger consists of thin plates having marginal packing grooves 39, Fig. 11.
