Abstract
818,603. Making heat exchangers. SERCK RADIATORS Ltd. Jan. 22, 1958 [Jan. 30, 1957], No. 3240/57. Class 83 (2). [Also in Group XIII] In a heat exchanger consisting of thin parallel metal plates or walls with corrugated sheets or strips therebetween the corrugated sheets are attached by pressure or electrical resistance welding at different positions on both sides of each wall so that on assembly the corrugations or fins occupy the whole space between each adjacent pairs of walls. As shown in Figs. 1 and 2, each wall is marked out in nine squares of equal size and on the adjacent faces of each pair of walls a, a<SP>1</SP> corrugated sheets b, bl are welded in alternate squares such that on assembly the space between the walls is completely occupied by the two sets of fins. The fins on one side of each wall plate may be parallel or at right angles to those on the opposite side. At the edges of each pair of walls are opposed flanges c, c<SP>1</SP> which form the boundaries of the fluid channels. In a modification, Figs. 4 and 5, the walls have stepped flanges c, c<SP>1</SP> and the fins b, bl are arranged longitudinally on the complementary halves of the inner faces of the walls a, a<SP>1</SP> while the fins b2, b<SP>3</SP> are similarly located on the outer faces, but have their corrugations at right angles to those of the fins b, b<SP>1</SP>.
