Abstract

499,975. Machine guns. HALEY, T. Aug. 17, 1937, No. 22597. [Class 92 (ii)] [Also in Group XXVII] In a silencer for machine guns comprising a casing 10 divided into compartments by partitions 13, the gases entering at 11 and being caused to pass through spiral convolutions 15 in each compartment, and the direction of flow being reversed in succeeding compartments, the successive turns of the spirals 15 are spaced apart by projections formed by flaps or tongues cut out of the material and bent outwardly. The communicating openings 14 between the compartments are staggered as shown. The partitions may be spaced so that the compartments decrease in size towards the exit 1.2. The Figure shows the silencer in connection with a flash-concealing device for a machine gun, comprising a hood 19 with aperture 21 for the bullets, the gases flowing through apertures 22 and conduits 23, 17 to the silencer.
