Abstract
380,305. Exhaust silencers. BRETSCHNEIDER, J., Wilsdruff, Saxony, Germany. Nov. 28, 1931, No. 33015. Convention date, Nov. 28, 1930. [Class 7 (ii).] The exhaust pipe 1 enters the convolutions of a spiral chamber 2 in such a manner that the gases are divided into a number of separate spiral streams one or more of which, on emerging from one convolution, mingle with the gases directly entering the next succeeding convolution. The gases may flow from the centre outwardly or vice versa, and the pipe 1 may enter the convolutions at right-angles to the axis thereof, parallel thereto or inclined. In the construction, Figs. 4 and 6, the spiral sheet 11 is closed by covers 4 lined by sheets of asbestos 5, and is fixed at the side edges by bolts 12 riveted to the outside convolution and to distance plates 13. The exhaust pipe 6 enters parallel to the axis, and its end is closed by a plate 7. The pipe is cut away at one side so as to open towards four of the convolutions, and these are cut away to open towards the pipe. The gases are therefore divided into four parts which travel in a helical path both towards the other side edge and the outer convolution which has several outlet openings 8 surrounded by a triangular hood 9. The gases ultimately escape through a pipe 18.
