Abstract

335,156. Sykes, J. E. April 16, 1929. Exhaust silencers.-The silencer comprises a pipe 1 with a series of baffle plates 2, the pipe being connected at one end to the exhaust manifold, the other end opening into a separate and enlarged oystershaped receptacle 3 having a restricted outlet and adapted to allow of a sudden expansion of the gases on leaving the pipe 1. The baffle plates are arranged in staggered formation from opposite sides of the pipe and inclined with their leading edges directed towards the outlet. The plates are preferably separately formed and passed through slits in the pipe and welded or otherwise secured thereto. The outlet of the receptacle 3 is flattened and strengthened by bars 7 secured by screws 8. The pipe 1 may be connected to the exhaust manifold by a flexible or other metal tube.
