Abstract
Water-resistant resins are prepared by reacting 2,75 to 3,5 mols., preferably 3 mols., of formaldehyde with 1 mol. of dicyandiamide under alkaline conditions, the reaction being carried out at boiling temperature or in the presence of added alkali, and being continued until at the reaction temperature and before cooling a gel or precipitate is formed. Water-soluble bye-products may be removed by hot water, which may contain sodium sulphite. There may be added fillers, e.g. wood meal, cellulose, cotton; colouring matter; fluxing agents; and hardening accelerators. Similar resins may also be prepared by alkaline condensation of dicyandiamide, phenol, and formaldehyde using, to 1 mol. of dicyandiamide, 2,75 to 3,5 mols. of formaldehyde, the formaldehyde being at least 1 mol., in excess of the total mols. of phenol and dicyandiamide. The phenol, or, alternatively, a phenol-formaldehyde resol, may be added during the dicyandiamide-formaldehyde condensation. Preferably the resol has been prepared by condensing phenol with less than an equimolecular quantity of formaldehyde for a time longer than that for which the dicyandiamide-formaldehyde condensation has been in progress. In examples: dicyandiamide and formaldehyde are condensed, with or without the addition of cellulose or wood meal; dicyandiamide, phenol, and formaldehyde are condensed by boiling; dicyandiamide and formaldehyde are condensed in the presence of caustic soda, a resol added prepared by condensing phenol and formaldehyde in the presence of ammonia, and the condensation continued.
