Abstract
A heat-hardenable resin is prepared by heating a phenol with more than two molecular proportions of formaldehyde, adding a basic substance (e.g. an alkali bicarbonate) to prevent precipitation, neutralizing the product with acid, reacting the neutralized product with a partial acetate of a polyhydric alcohol (with or without the addition of up to 10 per cent of boric acid), and dehydrating by distillation. In an example: 1 mol. of phenol is heated with 2 1/2 mols. of 40 per cent formaldehyde solution, and when the temperature reaches 80 DEG C., 0,02 mols. of sodium bicarbonate are added and heating continued at 100 DEG C. The mix is neutralized with lactic acid and one mol. of monoacetin added with or without 10 per cent boric acid (reckoned on the acetin). The product is dehydrated by vacuum distillation.
