Abstract

Synthetic resins having cation-exchange properties are obtained by partially condensing a monohydric phenol and an aldehyde or ketone, sulphonating the partially condensed product and then reacting the sulphonated product with a further amount of aldehyde or ketone until a water-soluble gel is obtained. One mol. phenol was refluxed for one hour with one half-mol. formaldehyde in presence of sodium bicarbonate and the product distilled up to 160 DEG C., the residue was cooled and 107 gs. 98 per cent H2SO4 added, the temperature being kept below 98 DEG C. The sulphonated product was diluted with water and 0.75 mol. formaldehyde added; the resulting gel granulated on washing with water, the grains being dried and ground to the required size. A resin made from crude carbolic acid containing 17.5 m-cresol, 5 per cent p-cresol and 52.5 per cent phenol is also described.
