Abstract
Gel-like monohydric phenol-formaldehyde resins having ion-exchange properties are obtained by heating an alkali salt of a monohydric phenol with a molar excess of formaldehyde in the presence of an alkali catalyst until a gel-like mass is obtained and then drying the gel. Molar proportions of at least 1.5 and preferably 2 or 3 of formaldehyde to one of the phenol are used. The phenol salt is prepared by adding sufficient alkali to the phenol to form the salt and leave excess of alkali to act as catalyst. 40 parts sodium hydroxide dissolved in 200 parts water are mixed with 96 parts of phenol and 600 parts of a 37 per cent solution of formaldehyde are added; the mixture was heated to 100-110 DEG C. for about 3 hours when gelation occurred, the gel being then dried for 3 hours at 100 DEG C.
