Abstract
Condensation products are prepared from formaldehyde, a phenol or bomologue thereof and an aromatic amine by condensing the formaldehyde with one of the aromatic components to yield a soluble resinous product and further condensing the product with the other aromatic compound and formaldehyde or with a preformed soluble resinous condensation derived from the other aromatic compound and formaldehyde the reaction taking place in a liquid or viscous medium, and the condensation being continued until formation of layers takes place. In examples (1) a viscous phenol-formaldehyde resol is dissolved in aniline and the product condensed with formaldehyde in the presence of sodium carbonate; (2) an acid condensed aniline formaldehyde resin is dissolved in phenol or cresol and the product condensed with formaldehyde in the presence of sodium carbonate or ammonia; (3) a semi-fluid resol prepared by alkaline condensation of phenol and formalddhyde is condensed with an acid condensed aniline-formaldehyde condensation product; (4) a liquid novalak prepared by acid condensation of phenol and formaldehyde is condensed with a liquid aniline-formaldehyde condensation product in the presence of ammonia and formaldehyde or hexamethylenetetramine. The products may be worked up with fillers such as asbestos for use in articles for electro-technical purposes.
