Abstract
Resol resins are made by condensing a molar excess of phenolic material with formaldehyde in the presence of a strongly basic oxide or hydroxide of a divalent electropositive metal at a pH greater than 7 to produce a non-heat hardenable novolak resin which is then reacted with formaldehyde at a pH above 7, the condensation being stopped before the resol becomes insoluble. The molar ratio of condensed formaldehyde to phenol in the final product exceeds 1 : 1. The phenolic material comprises phenol, meta-cresol, meta-ethyl phenol and mixtures thereof amongst themselves or with other phenolic compounds. Suitable catalysts for the first stage of the process are the oxides and hydroxides of barium, strontium, calcium and magnesium, whilst suitable catalysts for the second stage include the alkali metal hydroxides and carbonates, alkaline earth metal oxides and hydroxides, ammonia and organic bases. In the example, 3000 parts of phenol, 658 parts of formalin (36.35 per cent) and 30 parts of calcium carbonate are refluxed for 30 minutes and water distilled off to a temperature of 160 DEG C. and the excess phenol removed; 252 parts of the resultant novolak are mixed with 277 parts of water and 59.2 parts of 151.6 parts of formalin added and the solution heated to 90 DEG C. The product was suitable for use as a plywood adhesive.
