Abstract

495,587. Interrupters. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Aug. 27, 1937, No. 23556. Convention date, Aug. 28, 1936. [Class 38 (v)] In a vibratory switch for controlling small currents such as from a thermocouple, in which it is important to prevent the formation of induced currents by stray magnetic fields, contact is made with mercury by a pair of contact points arranged closely together so as to enclose as restricted a loop as possible. In the form shown in Fig. 1, the contact arm 10 is pivoted in the flexible metal cap 9 of a glass vessel 8 and is operated by a rotary cam 11 so as to bring points 14, 141 into and out of mercury cups 15, 16, thereby making and breaking a circuit from thermocouples 4 to an amplifier 6. In a modification, Fig. 2, a single pool of mercury 20 bridges two concentric pointed conductors 21, 22.
