Abstract
543,384. Mercury switches; electromagnetic switches. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd. June 13, 1941, No. 7497. Convention date, June 15, 1940. [Class 38 (v)] When the tube 22 is oscillated about the vertical axis 37, mercury or other conducting liquid 36 in the horizontal portion of the tube is moved by centrifugal force past a constriction 35 to unite with a globule of mercury 39 and complete a circuit between conductors 37, 38. When the oscillation ceases, surface tension causes the mercury column to separate into its original two parts. A duct 40, into which mercury cannot enter, extends the length of the tube and facilitates the passage of gas from one part of the tube to the other. The oscillation of the tube may be produced by alternating current of suitable frequency passing through a coil of wire fixed to the vertical portion of the tube 22 and movable in a fixed magnetic field, the frequency, being regulatable by varying the tension of a wire by which the tube is suspended.
