Abstract
495,586. Pressure gauges. GIERS, C. A. DE. Aug. 23, 1937, No. 23087. Convention date. June 16. [Class 106 (ii)] An instrument for indicating the depth of liquid in a tank comprises a sylphon having a closed end upon which the pressure fluid acts and an open end with a stem attached to the inside of the closed end and extending to engage at right-angles one arm of a pivoted lever, the other arm of which is engaged at right-angles by a spring. The pipe 30 is in communication at the lower end with a pipe through which compressed air is supplied to a small bell located at the bottom of the liquid tank. The liquid is first forced out of the bell and then the supply shut off and the liquid head allowed to compress the air in the pipe system. The air enters an hermetically sealed chamber 32 carried as a unit with the gauge mechanism, forces down the closed end 36 of the sylphon which through a pointed stem 40, acts on one end of a lever 46 pivoted on a knife edge 48, and acted upon at the other end by a spring 60 acting through a yoke 54 and point 52. A link 74 transmits motion through a toothed quadrant and pinion 76, 82 to the pointer spindle. An adjustable cam 86 constitutes a stop for the lever and may be moved around so that the arm 90 locks the lever when the instrument is to be transported. The tension of the spring 60 may be adjusted by shifting the plugs 58 and passing the pins 92 between different convolutions.
