Abstract

492,864. Hydraulically - operated fastenings. WEBB,D.E. Feb. 11, 1938, No. 4392. Convention date, Feb. 20, 1937. [Class 44] A lock mechanism for the doors of motor road vehicles of the kind having two doors on each side with their hinges remote from one another, comprises hydraulic transmission mechanism situated in the jamb separating the two doors on one side, which mechanism transmits the motion of the usual manually operated bolt on one of the doors to a bolt arranged to lock the other door. The jamb on the other side of the vehicle may be provided with two hydraulically operated bolts, one for each door, connected to the transmission line by a pipe. The bolt 16 of the lock 12 on one of the doors passes, when projected, through the wall 30 of the jamb and through an opening in the end of a casing 28 housed in the jamb, thus locking the door and displacing a piston 38 in the casing 28. The bolt 48 in the casing 28 is projected by the displaced liquid acting on the piston 42 to lock the other door. A casing 128 having two hydraulically operated bolts may be connected to the casing 28 by a pipe 24 to lock the doors on the other side of the vehicle. In this case the piston 38 is made larger in diameter than the pistons 42 which actuate the bolts 48. Springs 40, 44 return the pistons and bolts to their retracted positions when the key-lock 12 is operated to release the doors. The liquid, which is preferably a mixture of oil and alcohol, is prevented from coming in contact with, or passing, the pistons by washers 52. A passage 56, closed by a screw 62 and a check valve 64, allows liquid to be added to the system whilst a passage 66, closed by a screw 70, allows liquid to be removed. In a modification, the two bores in each casing are offset from each other so as to enable the mechanism to be accommodated in jambs which are too narrow to allow the bores to be arranged in axial alignment.
