[Class 44] A fastening for doors and windows of vehicles comprises a bolt normally retracted by a spring and shot by fluid pressure derived from the lubrication system of the engine. The pressure supply is thus . dependent on the running of the engine so that the bolts are shot and the doors cannot be opened whilst the vehicle is in motion. In a simple form the bolt carries a piston slidable in a cylinder, to which pressure is supplied to move the piston to shot position, the outward motion being limited by an internal sleeve carried by the cylinder end and surrounding the bolt. The spring for retracting the bolt surrounds this sleeve and bears against the piston. Fig. 3 shows the application to a motor vehicle having two doors 19 which close against a central pillar 31. A double-ended cylinder 12 housed within the pillar has. two pistons 20 carrying the bolts 10 which project through the ends of. the cylinders into engagement with keepers 47, carried on the door edge, when pressure is supplied to the cylinder through a central pipe 41. Conical springs 29 on the outer sides of the pistons normally hold the bolts retracted. The bolt ends may be bevelled so that the doors may be slammed if the bolts have been shot with the doors open. The cylinder covers have air-vent holes 38. The Specification describes the use of a reservoir in the supply system with a valve for automatically controlling the supply to the fastening members responsive to the pressure in the reservoir. The bolts such as 10 instead of acting directly as fastenings, may serve to hold the bolts of latches or locks in their projected position.
