Pneumatically and electrically operated fastenings.-Relates to railway carriage-door fastenings operated from the guard's van by vacuum, air pressure, or electrically. The locking-bolt is in two parts S, N connected together by the rod X fixed in the bracket R and entering a recess in the bracket W, a spring Z being placed between the brackets. This arrangement allows the door to be closed after locking and also allows unlocking in case of emergency by means of the cam 5 turned by a key. Fig. 2 shows an arrangement operated by vacuum, the piston A when drawn down shooting the bolt to which it is connected by the links E, H. When the vacuum is destroyed, the springs D and P co-operate to raise the piston and return the bolt to the unlocked position. When compressed air is employed, the piston A may act directly on the bolt N as shown in Fig. 6. Loss of power by leakage past the piston is prevented by a washer A<1>, against which the piston abuts at the end of its stroke; a. similar washer is employed in a modification of the vacuum-operated apparatus. When electricity is used, a solenoid may be substituted for the cylinder and piston shown in Fig. 6, the core of the solenoid acting on the end of the bolt N.
