[Class 99 (i)] In a steam superheater, for a locomotive or like smoke tube boiler of the kind described for example in Specification 263,223, [Class 123 (iii)], in which the header 1 is provided with a series of pockets 2, 3 to which the inlet and outlet ends 4, 5 of superheater elements are secured by clamp bars 7 and bolts &c. 15, alternate pockets being for saturated and superheated steam respectively, and each pocket, except the two end 'ones, having connected to it the inlet or outlet ends of two elements. The clamp bars are so shaped that each element will be connected to the header in such manner as to ensure correct direction of steam flow therethrough. Fig. 1 shows an arrangement in which the clamp bars are of trapezoidal shape in plan, the bars being fitted to the " left-hand" elements so that the longer of the parallel sides lies nearer the tube plate 8, when the elements are in position in the boiler, and to the " right-hand " elements in the opposite manner. The clearance between adjacent bars, and between the end bars and register members 12 on the boiler shell, is adapted to be relatively slight so that an element cannot be fitted in the place of one of opposite hand. Several modifications are described; for example, the bars may be rectangular in plan and trapezoidal in elevation, Fig. 6, or as shown in Fig. 8.
