[Class 20 (iii)] Sliding sashes of the kind adapted to pivot when moved to certain positions are provided with a catch 18 automatically engaging a recess in the upper guide channel 7 to retain the sash in pivoting position. A flattened pivot 11 at the bottom enters a throated recess 13, Fig. 7a, in the pivoting position and after initial rotation prevents sliding movement of the pivot. The catch 18 is actuated on initial pivoting movement of the window by an anglepiece 25 having inclined jaws, Fig. 8, engaging a lever 16 pivoted on the frame and operatively connected by the link 20 to the catch. The catch 18 is held down by a spring 24. The upper pivot of the window engages an angleplate attached to a bar 5 having a rectilinearmovement ball-bearing in the channel guide 7. The sliding sash is combined with a hinged sash 2 which is held closed by the sliding sash 4 and may be opened when the sliding sash is in the pivoting position, Fig. 3.
