Abstract
In roasting nickel matte in a rotary kiln, the unroasted matte is mixed with roasted matte to lower the sulphur content, say to about 8 per cent, so as to reduce the risk of partial melting. Roasting is effected at a temperature of about 1000 DEG C. in the presence of a substantial excess of oxygen. The roasted matte may be heated to 1100-1300 DEG C. to remove residual sulphur, the heating being effected in the presence of only a small excess of oxygen. The two stages may be effected in a single rotary kiln, the material to be roasted and the combustion gases being lead through the kiln in countercurrent. The gases entering the kiln contain only a small excess of air, air being admitted at one or more points through the kiln shell. The content of free oxygen in the gases leaving the kiln is between 10 and 15 per cent. A statement of the art relates to a process wherein fine-grained nickel matte is heated in a furnace, cooled, the lumps reduced to a powder, and the material reintroduced into the furnace.
