Abstract
In a process for reducing oxidic ores in the presence of carbonaceous material, the principal part of the reduction is effected in a rotary furnace and the mixture of partly-reduced ore and excess carbonaceous material is directly transferred to an externally heated retort for further reduction. Approximately 70 per cent reduction is preferably obtained in the rotary furnace and the amount of excess carbonaceous material transferred is approximately 20 per cent of the weight of the ore. In the example described, oxidic iron ore (with 35 per cent Fe) and coke was fed into a rotary furnace and reduced in counter-current to the furnace gases at a temperature of 1000 DEG C. so that 65 per cent reduction of the ore was obtained. The partially reduced ore and excess coke, which amounted to 25 per cent of the weight of the ore, was then transferred to a retort heated by oil burners where after 1 hour, 95 per cent reduction was obtained. The charge was then cooled and removed on a belt. The exhaust gases from the retort may be burnt in the rotary furnace.
