Abstract

The residues from roasting iron pyrites, whilst in the incandescent state, are collected in water and sheltered from contact with the surrounding air, whereby the iron present is obtained in the form of magnetic oxide, which is separated magnetically from other substances present. The residues may be collected directly from the roasting ovens, or they may first be passed through a heat insulated or heated tube with a controlled air supply to remove residual sulphur. In a modification cooled pyrites cinders may be heated to incandescence and then be collected as above described. The magnetic oxide obtained may be agglomerated in a rotating furnace heated internally by a mixture of reducing gas and mazout, or be passed direct to a melting furnace for the production of cast iron or steel. Specification 409,936 is referred to.ALSO:Magnetic iron oxide, obtained by quenching roasted pyrites in water and subjecting the quenched mass to magnetic separation, is either agglomerated in a rotating furnace heated internally by a mixture of reducing gas and mazout, or passed direct to a melting furnace, together with the necessary materials to form a dross and coal or mazout, and used for the production of cast iron or steel.
