486,138. Metallic-vapour apparatus. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., and FRANCIS, V. J. Jan. 19, 1937, Nos. 1594 and 10027. Drawings to Specification. [Class 39 (i)] A high - pressure metal - vapour discharge device has starting and running electrodes which form together a self-supporting, substantially cylindrical structure, the running electrode being a refractory metal head at one end, and the starting electrode, of thermionically active material supported by a metal, lying behind the head and forming part or the whole of a shaft terminating in and not substantially wider than the head. The shaft may be a straight rod carrying a sleeve, for example a helix, coated with active material; or a helix of refractory metal enclosing a rod consisting of or carrying active material, or an activated helix ; or the shaft may be of porous conductive material saturated with active material, for example a sintered mass of tungsten powder and alkaline earth oxides. The head is preferably of tungsten and may be a sphere or cylinder or a helix wound round the end of the shaft; or the end of the shaft may be wound into a spiral. A non-activated sleeve such as a helix may intervene between the head and the thermionically active portions. Auxiliary ignition electrodes may be provided. The conditions governing the distance between the starting and running electrodes are discussed. Specifications 425,597, 444,545, and 472,658 are referred to.
