950,237. Discharge lamps. PATENTTREUHAND-GES. FUR ELEKTRISCHE GLUHLAMPEN. Dec.22, 1961 [Dec.27, 1960], No. 46088/61. Heading H1D. A high-pressure electric discharge lamp with a magnetically stabilized discharge arc comprises two electrodes 2, 3, Fig. 1, carried by lead-in conductors 4, 5 sealed into the envelope 1, at least one of the electrodes having an emitting portion 9, Fig. 2, arranged axially in the lamp in the vicinity of which there is a coil 7 which establishes the electric connection between the lead-in conductor and the emitting portion of the electrode, the turns 8 of which are spaced apart so that the current follows the turns of the coil and produces an axial magnetic field within the lamp. The emitting portion may be of tungsten in the form of a rod with a pointed tip 10, and the internal diameter and the axial length of the coil preferably not less than one-third nor more than three times the electrode spacing. The coil is cylindrical or tapered and may be of non-circular cross-section. Both electrodes may in the form of rods supported by coils. The magnetic field produced is between 5-100 Oersteds, preferably 10-40 Oersteds, and the gas filling is preferably xenon at a few atmospheres pressure, or a metal vapour above five atmospheres.
