482,057. Aircraft launching-gear. ARMSTRONG WHITWORTH AIRCRAFT, Ltd., SIR W. G., and LLOYD, J. Nov. 24, 1936, No. 32122. [Class 4] A method of assisting the take-off of an aircraft includes : supporting the aircraft, in its take-off attitude, wholly upon a motor-driven truck of which the power/weight ratio is not worse than that of the aircraft; starting and accelerating the truck, while operating the aircraft engines, up to a speed at which the aircraft is substantially air-borne; and then releasing the aircraft from the truck and stopping the truck. As shown, the truck 10 is provided with wheels 11 driven by motors 13 which may be aero-engines. The wheels may have pneumatic or solid rubber tyres and may be flanged for engaging with rails or have endless bands. When the truck is adapted to run on rails a turntable is arranged at the centre of radiating trucks. The aircraft is mounted on the truck in take-off attitude by means of struts 14, 18 pivoted to the track and engaging trunnions 15, 21 on the aircraft. The strut 18 is connected to the truck by e.g., a jack 20. A locking-device 22 is provided. The power/weight ratio may be less than ten and preferably six pounds per horse-power. Provision may be made for a driver on, and for braking, the truck.
