Abstract

885,689. Fire engines. LEYLAND MOTORS Ltd. Oct. 6, 1958 [Oct. 4, 1957], No. 31187/57. Class 47. A fire fighting vehicle chassis wherein the chassis frame 2 carries a pump 15 forward of the front wheels 3 and an engine 1 for driving the pump and the vehicle between the front wheels 3 and rear wheels 4, both the engine 1 and the pump 15 being mounted beneath the level of the top of the chassis frame 2, leaving the chassis frame in the rear of the driver's cab entirely clear for carrying a floor and any desired fire or rescue equipment. A wheeled escape or turntable may be mounted upon the chassis frame behind the rear wheels 4. The radiator 9 may be at the side of the vehicle with its fan driven from the main transmission shaft. The engine 1 may be covered by the chassis skirting (not shown) and is accessible through panels in the skirting. The pump controls are at the front of the vehicle and are covered by a roll top. Connection between the engine and the pump equipment is made by the movement of the gear lever into a notch in the gate distinct from all the vehicle driving notches and pneumatic power by which pump controls are operated is made available by bring- ing the gear lever into the pumping notch.
