Abstract
In a method of manufacturing steel from iron ores poor in manganese, the ores are first treated in a blast furnace with basic slagging without the addition of manganese for the production of a crude iron poor in manganese, and this product is treated with desulphurizing agents, particularly highly basic melts of alkaline earths and alkalies, preferably molten sodium carbonate. The desulphurized product is then worked up into steel in a Thomas converter, basic Martin furnace, or electric furnace. The mixing of the iron and soda may be effected by pouring or stirring.
