Abstract

In making low-carbon corrosion-resistant chromium steel, zirconium oxide, preferably in the form of the ore baddeleyite in a finely divided state, is mixed with the melt. The oxide may be about 5 per cent of the melt and may be added in admixture with finely divided lime. Ferro-titanium may also be added. The steels to be treated may contain less than 0,3 per cent of silicon, 4-27 per cent of chromium, up to 36 per cent of nickel or manganese or both, and less than 0,1 per cent of carbon. The treated melt may be superheated to about 3200 DEG F., and may be cooled for a short time to about 2950 DEG F., before pouring. The melting may be effected in a high frequency furnace, preferably having a zirconia lining, any slag formed being removed before the addition of the zirconium oxide.
